Nylon vs Polyester Leggings: Which Fabric Is Better? - Sleepy Sloth Ltd

Turn over the care label on almost any pair of leggings and you will usually see one of two main fibres: nylon (also called polyamide) or polyester, normally blended with elastane or spandex for stretch.

Both can make excellent activewear. The more useful question is not simply “which one is better?” but which fabric suits the way you move, the feel you prefer and the performance you need?

Nylon vs Polyester Leggings: The Quick Answer

Neither nylon nor polyester is automatically better for leggings. Nylon and polyester are both widely used in activewear because they are durable synthetic fibres that can be engineered to dry quickly and handle repeated movement. The finished feel depends heavily on the yarn, knit, fabric weight, elastane content and finishing, not just the fibre name.

As a general guide, nylon is widely valued in technical apparel for durability and stretch, while polyester is known for strength, durability and quick drying. In leggings, either can produce a soft, supportive, squat-proof fabric when the garment is designed well.

Feature Nylon / Polyamide Polyester
Common activewear use Technical leggings, swimwear and performance garments Leggings, tops, running gear and performance sportswear
Durability Known for durability and abrasion resistance Strong and durable
Drying Quick drying Quick drying
Stretch Much of the stretch in leggings comes from elastane/spandex and the fabric construction
Squat-proof coverage Depends on knit density, fabric weight, colour, fit and how far the fabric is stretched

What Is Nylon in Leggings?

Nylon is the commercial name for a group of synthetic fibres called polyamides. So if your leggings label says “polyamide”, it is referring to the same broad fibre family most shoppers know as nylon.

Textile Exchange describes nylon as a popular performance fibre used in activewear, swimwear and technical garments because of properties including durability and stretchiness.

That makes nylon and recycled nylon particularly useful where a fabric needs to tolerate repeated movement and friction while retaining a close-to-the-body fit.

What Is Polyester in Leggings?

Polyester is another synthetic performance fibre and is the most widely used fibre globally. In sportswear it is valued for being strong, durable and quick to dry.

REI’s fabric guide notes that both nylon and polyester are common activewear fibres because they wick moisture and dry quickly, while breathability varies depending on yarn size and the knit or weave.

This is important because it explains why two polyester leggings can feel completely different. A lightweight performance knit and a brushed, buttery-soft knit may both be polyester-based but behave very differently.

Is Nylon Softer Than Polyester?

There is no reliable rule that says every nylon fabric is softer than every polyester fabric.

The feel of leggings is influenced by:

  • Yarn thickness
  • Knit structure
  • Brushing or finishing
  • Fabric weight
  • Elastane percentage
  • Compression level

Many nylon-rich leggings are engineered to feel smooth and close to the skin, while modern polyester fabrics can also be finished to produce a very soft, buttery hand-feel.

So if comfort is your priority, judge the finished fabric, not only the care-label composition.

Which Fabric Is Better for Sweaty Workouts?

Both nylon and polyester can work well for sweaty workouts because both are commonly used in moisture-managing, quick-drying activewear.

For running, HIIT, Hyrox or harder gym sessions, look for more than fibre type. Useful features include:

  • Breathable construction
  • Moisture management
  • Quick drying
  • Secure waistband design
  • Four-way stretch
  • Good recovery after stretching

A well-designed nylon legging may outperform a poor polyester one, and the reverse is equally true.

Which Is More Durable: Nylon or Polyester?

Both are durable fibres. Nylon has a particularly strong reputation in technical applications where abrasion resistance matters, while polyester is also known for strength and durability.

For leggings, durability is especially important around high-friction areas such as the inner thighs, seat and waistband.

But fibre type alone cannot predict how long leggings will last. Construction quality, fit and care all matter. A dense, well-made polyester fabric can outlast a lightweight nylon fabric if it is better engineered for the activity.

Which Is More Squat-Proof?

Neither nylon nor polyester is automatically more squat-proof.

Opacity depends on the finished fabric, including:

  • Fabric weight and density
  • Knit construction
  • Colour
  • Correct sizing
  • Stretch and recovery
  • How much tension is placed on the material

A black nylon legging can become transparent if it is overstretched, while a well-made lighter polyester fabric can remain completely opaque.

If coverage matters to you, read our guide to what squat-proof actually means and how to test leggings in 60 seconds.

What Does Elastane Do in Leggings?

Whether the main fibre is nylon or polyester, most performance leggings also contain elastane, spandex or another stretch fibre such as Creora®.

That stretch component helps the fabric extend as you squat, bend and move, then recover towards its original shape afterwards.

More elastane does not automatically mean better leggings. The quality of the fibres, the knit structure and the overall garment design all influence how supportive or flexible the finished product feels.

Nylon vs Polyester for Yoga

Yoga places leggings under repeated stretch through forward folds, lunges, twists and poses such as downward dog.

For yoga, prioritise:

  • Four-way stretch
  • Softness against the skin
  • Reliable coverage
  • A waistband that stays comfortable
  • Good shape recovery

Both nylon and polyester blends can deliver these qualities when the fabric is designed well.

Nylon vs Polyester for Pilates

Pilates involves controlled movement, but the fabric still has to work hard. Bridges, leg extensions, side-lying exercises, roll-ups and Reformer movements repeatedly stretch the garment through the hips, knees and waist.

The best Pilates leggings therefore need softness, coverage and enough recovery to stay in position throughout the session.

For a complete checklist, see our guide to choosing the best leggings for Pilates.

Nylon vs Polyester for Gym and Running

For higher-intensity training, the finished performance matters more than whether “nylon” or “polyester” appears first on the label.

Look for:

  • Moisture management
  • Breathability
  • Stretch recovery
  • Secure waistband construction
  • Abrasion resistance
  • Reliable coverage

Polyester is extremely common across sportswear, but nylon and polyamide blends are also widely used in performance leggings. The better option is the garment that matches your training.

What About Recycled Nylon and Recycled Polyester?

Recycled versions of both fibres are increasingly used as alternatives to virgin fossil-based synthetics.

Textile Exchange identifies recycled polyester and recycled nylon as important recycled synthetic options and points to standards such as the Recycled Claim Standard and Global Recycled Standard for verifying recycled input and chain of custody.

However, recycled synthetic fabric is not impact-free. Synthetic materials still require processing and can present challenges including microfibre shedding and end-of-life recycling.

That is why it is useful to look at the whole garment rather than one claim: recycled content, certification, durability, how often you will wear it, how you care for it and how long it remains useful.

A Real Sleepy Sloth Example: Cloud Fit vs Power-Fit

Sleepy Sloth currently uses both recycled polyester and recycled polyamide in different sustainable leggings because each fabric produces a different finished garment.

Cloud Fit™ — Recycled Polyester

Our Cloud Fit™ Sustainable High-Waisted Yoga & Pilates Leggings use 82% recycled polyester and 18% spandex.

They are designed around a buttery-soft, cloud-like feel with medium compression, four-way stretch, a high-rise waistband and squat-proof coverage. Their main focus is Reformer Pilates, Pilates, yoga and everyday movement.

Power-Fit — Recycled Polyamide

Our Power-Fit Sustainable Yoga & Pilates Leggings use 68% recycled polyamide and 32% Creora® elastane.

They are designed for a sculpting second-skin feel and are intended for a broader mix of activities including yoga, Pilates, HIIT, Hyrox, running and gym sessions.

Neither fabric is presented as universally better. They are two different examples of how fibre blends can be selected to create different fits and performance profiles.

How to Read a Leggings Fabric Label

Use fibre percentages as a starting point rather than a final verdict.

When comparing leggings, ask:

  • What activity are they designed for?
  • Does the product explain the compression level?
  • Does the fabric have four-way stretch?
  • Is it designed to remain opaque under movement?
  • Does the waistband suit the activity?
  • Is recycled content independently certified where claimed?
  • What washing and care does the garment require?

The best specification on paper still has to work as a finished garment.

Does Fit Matter More Than Fabric?

Fit can completely change the way fabric behaves.

If leggings are too small, the material may be stretched further than intended across the hips and glutes. That can affect comfort, waistband performance and opacity.

If they are too large, they may slide down or bunch during movement.

If staying up is a problem, see our guide explaining why leggings roll down and how to fix it.

How Should You Care for Nylon and Polyester Leggings?

Both fibres are generally straightforward to care for, but remember that leggings usually contain stretch fibres too.

For performance activewear, sensible habits include:

  • Following the garment care label
  • Washing at lower temperatures where recommended
  • Turning leggings inside out
  • Avoiding fabric softener
  • Air drying where possible
  • Avoiding excessive heat

For the complete routine, read our UK guide to washing activewear and leggings.

So, Which Fabric Is Better?

Choose the finished legging, not the fibre name alone.

Nylon/polyamide can be an excellent choice for durable, technical activewear. Polyester can be an excellent choice for strong, quick-drying performance garments. Both can be engineered to feel soft, supportive and comfortable.

For most shoppers, these questions matter more:

  • Does it fit properly?
  • Does it stay in place?
  • Is it comfortable against your skin?
  • Does it remain opaque when stretched?
  • Does the compression suit you?
  • Is it appropriate for the activity?
  • Will you want to wear it repeatedly?

Nylon vs Polyester Leggings FAQs

Is nylon the same as polyamide?

Yes. Nylon is the commercial name for a family of synthetic polymers called polyamides, so activewear labels may use the word polyamide.

Is nylon better than polyester for leggings?

Not automatically. Both can make high-quality leggings. The knit, fabric weight, stretch content, construction and fit are just as important as the main fibre.

Which fabric is better for Pilates leggings?

Both can work well. Pilates leggings should prioritise softness, four-way stretch, reliable coverage, recovery and a secure waistband.

Which fabric is better for gym leggings?

Both nylon and polyester are widely used in gym leggings. Choose according to moisture management, fit, support, abrasion resistance and the intensity of your training.

Which is more squat-proof: nylon or polyester?

Neither fibre guarantees squat-proof coverage. Opacity depends on the finished fabric, including knit density, colour, fit, stretch and construction.

Is recycled polyester the same as virgin polyester?

They are both polyester fibres, but recycled polyester uses recycled polyester-based feedstock rather than relying entirely on newly produced virgin polyester raw material.

Is recycled nylon a good activewear material?

Recycled nylon can be used in durable technical activewear. As with any fabric, the finished performance depends on the complete blend and garment construction.

What percentage of elastane is best in leggings?

There is no universal ideal percentage. Different blends can produce excellent leggings depending on yarn quality, knit structure, compression and intended use.

Does polyester make you sweat more than nylon?

Breathability cannot be predicted from fibre name alone. Yarn size, knit construction, garment thickness and ventilation all influence how breathable activewear feels.
