Should You Size Up or Down in Leggings? | Sleepy Sloth - Sleepy Sloth Ltd

If you're between sizes in leggings, start with the brand's measurements and the fit advice for that particular style. Size up if the smaller pair digs in or restricts movement. Consider sizing down if the larger pair feels loose around both your waist and hips. If neither fits comfortably, a different cut may be the better answer.

At Sleepy Sloth, our general size guide recommends sizing up between sizes for a more relaxed fit. Always check the individual product's sizing information too.

The aim is a pair you can move in comfortably, whether you're heading to Reformer Pilates, flowing through yoga or wearing your leggings for a walk and coffee afterwards.

How tight should leggings be?

Workout leggings should sit close to your body without making you feel squeezed or restricted. Some styles deliberately feel firmer than others, so a sculpting legging and a soft studio legging may feel different even when both fit correctly.

A comfortable pair should let you sit, bend and take a full breath. The waistband should feel secure, and you shouldn't need to keep adjusting the crotch or pulling the legs into place.

Don't choose a smaller size simply to get more compression. Choose a style with the support you prefer, in a size that fits your measurements.

Signs you may need to size up

Try the next size or a different cut if:

  • The waistband digs in and feels uncomfortable, especially when sitting.
  • Your hips or thighs feel restricted during a squat or stretch.
  • The seams look strained or the fabric becomes noticeably sheer during movement.
  • You struggle to settle the crotch into its intended position.

Sheerness isn't always a sizing problem: fabric, colour and construction also matter. If coverage is poor even in the correct size, choose another pair rather than accepting it.

Signs you may need to size down

A smaller size may be worth trying if your measurements support it and:

  • There is a noticeable gap at the waist.
  • The fabric feels loose around both the hips and waist.
  • The crotch drops as you walk.
  • The entire pair slides down during movement.

A little wrinkling at the ankles doesn't automatically mean your leggings are too big. They may simply be too long. Likewise, a loose waist with tight hips can point to a cut that doesn't suit your proportions.

Sizing isn't a judgement on your body. The letter on the label is there to help you find clothing that fits; it isn't a target to work towards.

How to measure for leggings

Use a flexible tape measure and take your measurements without pulling it tight.

Waist: measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape level and breathing normally.

Hips: measure around the fullest part of your hips and bottom, with your feet together.

Inside leg: check the product's stated inseam against a pair that finishes where you like it. If the guide requests a body measurement, follow its instructions.

Compare your measurements with the Sleepy Sloth size guide and the sizing information on your chosen product.

If your waist and hips fall into different sizes, avoid choosing solely by your waist measurement. Your leggings also need enough room through your hips. Ask for advice on the particular style if you're unsure.

Test the fit with movements you actually do

When trying leggings at home, keep the tags attached and follow the retailer's returns conditions. Then do a few gentle movements:

  1. Sit down: check whether the waistband remains comfortable.
  2. Squat: notice any pulling across the hips, thighs or crotch.
  3. Lunge or bend: check that you can move freely without repeatedly adjusting the fabric.
  4. Check coverage: look in a mirror in good light while the fabric is stretched.

For Pilates and yoga, pay particular attention to comfort while bending and sitting. Leggings that look great when standing should also feel good during your class.

Do rolling leggings mean you should size down?

Not necessarily. Sliding down and folding at the waistband can have different causes. Size is only one possibility; waistband shape, rise and fabric can also affect how a pair sits.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy my usual UK clothing size in leggings?

Use it as a starting point, then check the measurements. Size labels and fit can vary between brands and collections.

Will tight leggings stretch enough to fit eventually?

Don't rely on wear to fix an uncomfortable fit. Stretch fabric should allow movement from the start, and changes with wear vary by garment.

Should I size down for a sculpted look?

Choose a sculpting style in the correct size. Sizing down can create uncomfortable pressure or overstretch the fabric.

What if my leggings fit my hips but not my waist?

Another cut may work better. Sizing down could make the hips too tight, so compare waistband styles and ask for product-specific advice.
